USA vs Spain

June should be a telling month for the United States national soccer team.
On Saturday, Bob Bradley’s squad travels to Foxborough, Mass., to take on Spain, the No. 1 team in the world.
Three days later the Americans will square off against Canada in their first match of the Concacaf Gold Cup, a tournament the U.S. federation very much wants to win. If the Yanks make it to the June 25 final, they will have played seven intense international matches in the space of three weeks.
Many questions about the U.S talent pool will be answered along the way: Is Freddy Adu really back in the mix for the national team? Do the veteran defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Oguchi Onyewu still have something left in the tank? Will someone step up and stake a claim as Jozy Altidore’s strike partner?
Here are 10 observations about the U.S. Gold Cup in the build-up to the tournament.
1. Bob Bradley sometimes plays favorites.
Some United States supporters possess an almost-pathological dislike for two Bob Bradley favorites: left back Jonathan Bornstein and the coach’s son, Michael. In Bornstein’s case, a long history of poor performances and a seemingly endless supply of second chances drive the fan vitriol. The Michael Bradley haters tend to ignore his performances and simply accuse his father of nepotism.
Both players, it must be said, seem to get the benefit of the doubt whenever Bob Bradley makes a roster selection or names a starting lineup. Coincidentally, both players have struggled in recent months, spending a majority of their time on the bench for their club teams.
Perhaps anticipating an outcry from fans, Bradley went out of his way to suggest that both players deserved their roster spots despite their recent lack of playing time.
“Both Johnny [Bornstein] and Michael [Bradley] have shown in the past that they are two of our fittest players,” Bradley said during a Monday news conference, “so they both do a good job in that regard.”
All righty, then. If we’re to follow the coach’s logic, it doesn’t really matter that Bornstein or Michael Bradley can’t get any playing time with their club teams. They are in good shape, and apparently that’s enough for the Gold Cup.
We shall see.
2. Jozy Altidore is the centerpiece of the attack.
Jozy Altidore is not particularly fast. His first touch is inconsistent at best. He rarely tracks back on defense. He has struggled during his recent stint with Bursaspor in the Turkish first division. And he always seems to run out of gas somewhere around the 70-minute mark.
Despite all of this, Bradley is an unabashed Altidore fan, and the coach professed his devotion to the striker in no uncertain terms.

Bradley told reporters that Altidore “is an important player for our national team; he has scored important goals as we went through qualifying, he has scored goals in the Confederations Cup and as much as he did not score in the World Cup we still felt he was a little bit unlucky in that regard.”
“Jozy is still quite young,” Bradley continued, “and we’re going to continue to put him forward because he’s a big part of things for U.S. Soccer.”
In case any of that wasn’t clear, Altidore is The Guy. Get used to it.
3. Finding somebody to partner with Altidore is the challenge.
Altidore and the speedy Charlie Davies have played well together in the past, but Davies’s ongoing injury problems have prevented these two from maintaining any sort of on-field bond.
So who is Altidore’s optimal strike partner?
Robbie Findley struggled alongside Altidore during last year’s World Cup. So did Edson Buddle and Herculez Gomez. Perhaps due to their poor track record in South Africa, Bradley brought in two different players — the M.L.S. Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski and the talented teen Juan Agudelo — to see if either can form an understanding with the 21-year-old Altidore.
If neither option pans out, Bradley can follow a familiar pattern: sub out Altidore late in the game, push Clint Dempsey to striker and hope that the tough Texan can make something happen in the waning moments.
4. This is Clint Dempsey’s team.
Yes, Carlos Bocanegra is the captain of the U.S. squad. But he is in the twilight of his international career and is now a marginal player who scrapes by in central defense and is a liability at left back.
And yes, Landon Donovan leads the roster in international appearances (130) and goals (45). But his timid performances against Argentina and Paraguay, along with his decision to remain in M.L.S. when European opportunity beckoned, have hurt his standing.
Dempsey, on the other hand, is at the pinnacle of his game. The 28-year-old scored 12 goals for Fulham this season and recently became the all-time leading scorer in Fulham’s Premier League era. He is technically gifted, aggressive, imaginative, tireless and unwilling to take a step back. He is the heart and soul of the U.S. squad.
5. Jermaine Jones needs a chance to shine.
If you watched Blackburn play the last few months, you couldn’t help notice Jermaine Jones doing the dirty work in the middle of the field.
The German-born Jones isn’t a scorer or a technical wiz. He just plays the game with zeal, makes smart decisions and always seems to be in the heart of the action. He is also a strong two-way player, someone who specializes in turning tough tackles into dangerous counterattacks.
Granted, Jones did not perform particularly well in the Americans’ two March friendlies, playing 45 minutes in each game and never getting into a good rhythm. But his showing over the last four months in the Premier League warrants some extended playing time during the Gold Cup, even if that means Michael Bradley has to spend some time on the bench.
6. Robbie Rogers: cross his name on the list.
Take a look at the list of midfielders on the roster. Two of them, Donovan and Dempsey, play on the wings but specialize in cutting in toward the center of the field. Five others — Bradley, Jones, Maurice Edu, Freddy Adu and Sacha Kljestan — prefer central roles. (Alejandro Bedoya, added to the roster to replace the injured Benny Feilhaber, can play either midfield
position.)
And then there’s Robbie Rogers, one of the biggest surprises on the team.
Rogers, 24, is a speedy winger who lives on the sidelines. His specialty: sending crosses into the box, where the U.S. should have a height advantage against most Concacaf opponents.
The Columbus Crew star probably won’t start any games, but if the U.S. is tied or trailing late in a game, don’t be surprised if Rogers gets the call and is asked to provide some width to a squad that otherwise tends to play very narrow.
7. The U.S. team needs to use its height advantage.
Oguchi Onyewu is 6-foot-4 and a force in the air. So is Clarence Goodson. Dempsey plays far taller than his 6-1 frame. All told, the national team has 15 players 6 feet or taller, which gives them a significant height advantage against many of the teams they will face this summer.
Rogers’s ability to deliver accurate crosses will be crucial to their success. Fullbacks Steve Cherundolo and Eric Lichaj will need to press forward and get their crosses in, too. Equally important, Donovan will have to step it up and deliver better corner kicks than he managed against Paraguay and Argentina.
If the United States is going to win the Gold Cup and gain entry to the 2013 Confederations Cup, they’re going to have to score on free kicks and via headed balls.
8. The 6-foot-5 Omar Gonzalez should be on the roster, too.
For whatever reason, Bob Bradley isn’t yet sold on Los Angeles Galaxy central defender Omar Gonzalez. The 22-year-old Gonzalez was the 2009 M.L.S. rookie of the year, made the 2010 M.L.S. All-Star team and is off to a great start in 2011. But he lost out on a roster spot to the likes of Jonathan Spector, Bornstein and Onyewu, who has been plagued with injuries over the last few months.
Hard to figure.
9. Brad Guzan and Bob Bradley may be heading for divorce.
Guzan is a big, strong, reliable, experienced goalkeeper, the national team’s no-doubt-about-it No. 2 behind Tim Howard. Or at least he used to be. Guzan is getting married this summer and let it be known that he was unavailable for Gold Cup duty. Bob Bradley, a coach known for being all business all the time, did not seem particularly enthusiastic about the coming nuptials.
Bradley’s terse analysis of the situation: “Brad made a personal decision and his schedule didn’t allow him to be available for this Gold Cup.”
Bradley didn’t send his regards to the groom-to-be, and he didn’t mention where Guzan and his fiancée were planning to honeymoon either. He could have let his backup keeper off the hook and made light of the situation; he very pointedly did not.
Best wishes, Brad.
10. Freddy Adu? Really?
Absolutely. Remember: Adu is still only 21 years old, and since securing a regular role for Çaykur Rizespor in the Turkish second division, he has been creating goals consistently.
By calling him into the squad, Bradley can assess Adu’s development and get an up-close look at a skillful player he’s been forced to monitor over the Internet. If Adu isn’t up to snuff, Bradley can plant Adu on the bench and give him a few substitute appearances in blowouts. But if the magic is back, Adu could be a difference-maker in front of the net, and that is something the United States desperately needs.

LI NA Tennis 2011

What are your immediate impressions of Li Na’s6-4, 7-6(0) victory over Francesca Schiavone for the French Open title?
The women’s tour was in total disarray two weeks ago. I’m not sure this fills the vacuum, but you could have done a lot worse than the defending champion and the first Chinese Grand Slam finalist playing for the trophy — and having the first Chinese winner. It was a reasonably competitive match. There are still a lot of questions swirling around the women’s game, but this was a nice uptick.
I was talking to Yao Ming a few months ago. Given how big sports are in Asia, he was surprised there haven’t been more sort of breakthrough figures. Li Na certainly fits that profile, so it will really be interesting to see how this plays out over there.
There’s been a lot of talk about Li’s victory prompting a tennis “boom” in China, but that’s awfully vague. What specific impact will you be looking for?
People always say that, but you’re never quite sure what the metrics are. Still, this isn’t Serbia we’re talking about. This is a much different model. If more people are going to watch than watched the Super Bowl, which isn’t out of the realm of possibility, that’s something you can monetize. If a sponsor is going to come up and put an event in China centered around Li Na, that’s something tangible.
And I also think it’s significant that she’s so colorful. She’s got a tattoo and her personality is quirky. She didn’t have the killer quotes that she had in Australia where she talked about her husband snoring, but she’s someone that people can identify with easily. People have a sense of who she is, which I think is important too. I think that’s a large part of what made Yao Ming this crossover figure as well, that he wasn’t this mysterious guy who didn’t speak English. People got him.
It wasn’t Novak Djokovic winning 43 in a row, but Schiavone had won 13 straight matches at Roland Garros entering today. What was Li able to do to end the Italian’s charmed run of play on these courts?
You don’t want to beat on Schiavone too bad, but it’s not like she had to go through the Williams sisters, Justine Henin and Martina Hingis to win those 13 matches. And Schiavone’s won a lot of close ones. We’re not talking about a hugely powerful player. Li stuck with her in the rallies and didn’t wilt in the breaker.
It’s a good win, a good storyline: Schiavone got her title last year and we have our first Chinese winner. Li Na won the first set in the Australian Open final against Kim Clijsters and was sort of shaky in the second too. It was nice she was able to get the butterflies out of her system in the first Grand Slam final and close the deal the second time.
Is Li a one-Slam wonder or do you see her contending at majors in the future?
Someone was joking her name should be Na Williams. She really plays well at the majors. If you look at her results at the Slams, she’s usually making that second week. At this stage in her career, there probably aren’t a ton of Slams left to win a second one. But given the state of the WTA Tour and given how she plays in majors, she absolutely will be a contender.
What’s next for both players moving forward in 2011?
I really admire Schiavone and like her game. But, realistically, is she going to win another major? Probably not.
But Li will be interesting. She had a terrible few months after the Australian Open where she just sort of burnt out, now she’s got a Grand Slam coming up in two weeks and I imagine the attention will be crazy — and that Wimbledon is fielding all sorts of requests from the Chinese media right now. It will certainly be interesting to see how it plays out. Anytime someone wins from an non-traditional tennis country, you hear the same things: what a game-changer for South Americaor this is really going to change tennis in Bulgaria. But China is a different beast and this could really be a seminal moment for tennis.

Kapil Sibal

The first day of Baba Ramdev’s hunger-strike against corruption at the Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi seemed like every bit of a spectacle that the Congress feared. However, as fiery as the Baba was in his speeches, talks continued with government representatives for the third day and they seemed to have significantly neutralised his approach till the drama of mutual betrayal unfolded towards the end of the day.
“The talks continued today. The government has made major assurances. However, we aren’t compromising on certain issues. Only time will tell how much we compromise,” said one of Ramdev’s advisors before charges of betrayal flew thick and fast. The contentious issue was understood to be the process through which black money could be brought under the purview of a strict judicial procedure.
But, the day ended with acrimony. First, the Congress launched a two-pronged attack on Ramdev. On the one hand, party leaders Digvijaya Singh and Abhishek Manu Sanghvi openly criticised him for allegedly taking help from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party for organising the campaign at the Ramlila Maidan. Later, Kapil Sibal, who had earlier held several rounds of talks with Ramdev, accused him of going back on his words of ending the fast.
Sibal said that Ramdev had given a written assurance to the government about ending the fast. The letter was signed by Ramdev’s aide. Ramdev said that the letter was meant only for the Prime Minister and was not to be made public. But, Sibal made the letter public, which was signed, he said, by one “acharya”. (Ramdev later identified the acharya as Balakrishna, who runs the main ashram of Ramdev in Haridwar.)
The letter, written in Hindi, reads as under:
As per the consent of respected Swami Ramdevji:
The government has given reply in writing to the issues raised by us.
We agree that the government will not only consider these issues seriously but also give an advance assurance to take concrete steps to push these issues forward.
We did not have full agreement on some issues but we are confident that the government will remain committed on whatever assurances it has given and take time-bound decision on some issues.
In view of this understanding, we will undertake tap (prayers and chants) from 4 to 6 June and that this will be announced [by the Baba] tomorrow, June 4, in the afternoon.
Sibal said that he and the other negotiator Subodh Kant Sahay kept telephoning the Ramdev’s aides throughout the afternoon, wanting him to announce the end of the fast, but he did not do that and hence they decided to make public the commitment he had made.
Sibal said that he and the other negotiator Subodh Kant Sahay kept telephoning the Ramdev’s aides throughout the afternoon, wanting him to announce the end of the fast, but he did not do that and hence they decided to make public the commitment he had made.
Ramdev reacted sharply to this disclosure by taking on the questions of the media at the Ramlila Maidan in front of his supporters. He took on the Congress, accused it of not being serious on tackling corruption and announced that his fast would continue. He also said that his fast and campaign were not communal in nature.
He said that the government is still adamant on forming a committee to consider a new law on corruption, which was not acceptable to him. He said that he would not listen to anybody except the Prime Minister. He also feared that the government is preparing ground to arrest him.
Earlier in the afternoon, Ramdev went out of the Ramlila Maidan and met some Congress leaders, where, supposedly, the letter was handed over to Sibal. Ramdev came back to the Ramlila Maidan at around 4:30 pm and addressed his followers. His speech, full of passionate rhetorical flourish, was markedly more subtle and sophisticated, an ability he is not well-known for. An obvious seal of Rashtriya Swabhiman Manch’s convenor and former BJP General Secretary KN Govindacharya was evident in his repititive appeals to “farmers, labourers, villagers and the poor”. Govindacharya, one of the top-most advisers to Ramdev is part of the movement and is understood to be one of the chief architects of the entire campaign.
Soon after, Sibal, tired at Ramdev not making any announcement to end the fast, called a press conference and made the letter public and accused Ramdev of going back on his words. After which, Ramdev launched the scathing attack on Sibal and the government.
Ramdev also rejected criticism around the inclusion of Sadhvi Ritambara in the campaign. He had shared the dias with him on Saturday morning. “There is something deeply wrong in the mindset of those who see communalism in a spiritualism gathering... Or truth is dead in them,” he said. “Some people are making irresponsible statements saying that Baba Ramdev is bringing instability in the country. I will pay any fine if I'm guilty of that... I have not sown seeds of communal hatred between Hindus and Muslims,” he said. “I am not initiating an ideological battle against anyone as for now,” he said in a rather carefully aimed statement.
Earlier in the day, it was a festive mood at the Ramlila Maidan. All roads from the New Delhi railway and metro stations led to the ground, as spirited crowds made their way to the venue of the fast. Tobacco, matchboxes, cigarettes, lighters and gutkas were banned inside the venue. The registration counters were the busiest sections of the ground, where all attendees had to fill up forms and enumerate personal details and the number of days for which they intend to fast. For the people who had made the long trip in the peak summer, it was more about responding to Ramdev’s call than having their own ideas on how to end corruption.
The stage, which is around 30 to 40 feet high from the ground level, had Ramdev seated with his close associates and religious leaders from the Muslim, Sikh and Jain community. Apart from Ritambara, another leader from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Pejawar Swami of the famous Pejawar Mutha of Udipi, shared the stage with Ramdev.
Social crusader Swami Agnivesh and Prashant Bhushan expressed reservations about against Ritambara’s presence on the stage. Bhushan said, “I don’t know why communal people are present on that stage. I think most of Baba Ramdev’s demands are reasonable, but, Ritambara’s presence might slightly show a glimpse of his political affiliations.”
“Sharing the dias with communal faces, like Sadhvi Ritambara, who is an accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case is not right, but, it’s their stage. They can bring anyone they want in their movement. I think people like Ritambara, who spew venom through their communal speeches, should not have been on that stage. It is my polite suggestion,” said Swami Agnivesh.
But, Ramdev’s informal way of addressing people won him many admirers as well. For many of his followers, the prospect of Ramdev leading a fight against corruption is inspiration enough to visit Delhi. As Hans Raj, 25, from Rajasthan’s Ganganagar district says, “I don’t know much about black money. I do <<yoga,>> and I admire Baba’s knowledge of yoga, which is why I am here.”
Rama Tai Jog, 77, from Ratnagiri goes one step ahead and says, “When a pure man like the Baba takes a cause as huge as this, we are all bound to follow. Any youth not participating in this movement should be ashamed.”

Brazil vs Holland

Brazil and Holland will play a friendly game tonight, in a rematch of the game that kicked the Seleção out of the World Cup 2010.
Everything is ready for kick off at 20.10pm in the Serra Dourada stadium in Goiania.

Even if the stadium won’t host any games for the coming World Cup, it certainly looks like it will: construction work everywhere, last minute preparations and politicians wandering in the corridor and knowing the place like the back of their hand. Indeed the stadium went through a renovation just for this game. It will benefit the clubs from Goiania: Atletico, Goias and Vila Nova.

And Ricardo Teixeira, president of the Brazilian federation, acknowledged the hard work to the point that he confirmed that it will be one of the stadiums hosting the Copa America 2015, which will be played in Brazil.

"Special, but still a friendly game," was the intelligent phrase with which Mano Menezes described tonight’s game against Holland. Menezes, like all the players who were asked throughout the week, said that this game wouldn’t be about revenge from the 2010 World Cup.

Instead, it is special because the adversary of the day is a big team. "Unless I'm mistaken, they haven’t lost once in their last 35 games," said Menezes. "I think that tells you all you need to know about their team."

It is special again for several reasons: it will be their first encounter since the World Cup, it’s Brazil's first game on their own soil since before the World Cup, and it is a form of exam for the players. Those who pass will go to the Copa America; those who fail will stay home. Finally, it will be Neymar's first game with the national team in front of his adoring public.

For the last two years, the Seleção has played away from home. Now that they meet again with their public in an official game, it is important that they show an attacking spirit and that the players that the fans want to see play are on the pitch. Menezes has ensured that is the case.

Yesterday he confirmed in a press conference his starting line-up: three strikers, no 'number ten,' and three defensive midfielders.

Menezes' one surprise was Fred's presence in the starting eleven, in attack with Neymar and Robinho. It was already a surprise to see him in the list of 22 players called to the national team. But after four years without wearing the yellow and green jersey, Fred will have a chance to prove himself.

On the other hand Holland come to Brazil with more or less the same team that made it to the World Cup final. The only major difference: Sneidjer is injured and won’t be there.

Immortal Song 2

Rolling in to meet high expectations (and high skepticisms), KBS’s “Immortal Song 2” finally made its debut on June 4th with its all-idol cast!
Idol stars are most often generalized as ‘3-second singers’ in the music industry, and so this program sought to dispel that belief once and for all, while also providing an in-depth look into the idols’ different sides. The first cast of “Immortal Song” comprises of 2AM’s Changmin, Super Junior’s Yesung,SISTAR’s Hyorin, SHINee’s Jonghyun, B2ST’s Yoseob, and IU, with many other idol stars set to appear in future episodes.
“Immortal Song 2″ will have each contestant sing unique covers, just like on “I Am a Singer“, however there will be no eliminations to challenge them. The six castmates will instead battle for pride, as the first place winner will be judged by a 200-member audience. Not only that, but they’ll also receive priceless pointers and tips from the original artists of the songs they cover.
The pilot episode sees them perform their preferred hits from the past for the first half as an introduction while the second half was their first mission, which was to remake a hit song from Shim Soo Bong, who actually sang for the opening of the show and stayed behind to watch her juniors perform.
For the show’s first recording, the audience was filled with 30+ year olds because they’re the generation that can most accurately judge the performances and pick the first winner.

Milla Jovovich

Having starred in action movies including Resident Evil, The Fifth Element and Ultraviolet, Milla Jovovich is no stranger to brandishing a sword.
And now it seems Milla's three-year-old daughter Ever is set to follow in her mother's footsteps, judging by a picture the actress posted on her Twitter page today.
In the shot, adorable Ever is seen pulling a screaming face for the camera, while holding up a play sword and wearing an elaborate guard on her arm.
The image, however, was somewhat ruined by the fact Ever was clad in a super-cute pink dress bearing the image of a cuddly kitten.
In the caption for the photograph, Milla wrote: 'Jst took this 1 of Ever 2day! RE (Resident Evil) 12 any1?'
Milla recently revealed she thinks Ever has what it takes to follow her into the showbiz industry.
She said: 'My mom said the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. My daughter Ever would be such an actress.
'She’s constantly going, "Okay, you be Ever and I’m momma," and we have to improvise a scene together with her playing me.
'You should see her singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. She has a voice that’s horrific, but the emotion is just so real.'
Milla is in Italy with Ever and her husband Paul Anderson, and the group appear to be thoroughly enjoying their holiday.
Earlier in the day, Milla tweeted: 'Just had 2 show u my weekend pics! We're at our dear friend Verde Visconti's castle in Grazzano, Italy!'
Then followed a flurry of pictures of the family taken from inside the grounds of the castle, including one humorous shot of Milla bearing a slingshot and aiming at a tree.
She wrote on her Twitter page: 'Lol! Paul taking a pic of me and my slingshot! I got that tree good!'

Catherine Zeta Jones

CATHERINE Zeta-Jones never “complained” about being depressed to husband Michael Douglas.
The Welsh actress — who earlier this year spent time as an in-patient at the Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut, to deal with Bipolar II disorder — didn’t admit her struggle to her spouse, who was suffering with throat cancer, but is now getting better.
“She’s doing fine. She’s been back working on her movie in Louisiana and she’s feeling great,” Michael said.
“Catherine’s a very strong woman and she’s had a lot to deal with. She was so supportive and caring of me that she couldn’t tell me or anyone else she was having a tough time herself.
“She’s not the type of person to complain she’s depressed when her husband is fighting cancer.”
Michael underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy in a bid to beat cancer and says he was pleased with how well Dylan, 10, and eight-year-old Carys — his children with Catherine — coped with his treatment, thinking the equipment it required was “cool” and similar to that seen in the ‘Star Wars’ movie series.
“They saw me getting radiation treatment and they thought it was like Star Wars. They thought it was the coolest thing they’ve ever seen with all the machines and the masks they put on your face,” he said.
“So in that way, I think you take the fear out of it. To be honest, kids are pretty resilient.”

Joan Jett

Joan Jett is a woman of contrasts.

One of the most feisty, hardy and uncompromising women in rock, she is also one of the most kind and least offensive.
She’s a paradox. Like Andrex, she’s both soft and strong.
She’s a devoted supporter of the US military and also a spokesperson for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
One of the original rock chicks, she’s made no secret of the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle she enjoyed aged just 15. And, at 52, she’s barely stopped touring since.
But when we speak, she’s at home in New York. Having just woken up, she’s reading the newspaper and playing with her cats.
Joan loves animals, but says as far as pets go, she had to stop at her three ex-shelter cats.
‘I’d love to have tons, but I’m away so much that it’s hard to give them all enough time,’ she tells me.
If there’s one thing you learn immediately about Joan, it’s that – whatever else she may be – she is always considerate and principled.
This is why she recently turned down the chance to appear on bothAmerican Idol and Dancing with the Stars.
Joan explains: ‘I was extremely honoured to be asked. It’s a really big platform for people who feel that’s right for them.
‘But for me a lot of things on music television seem very schticky.
‘For me, it doesn’t feel genuine to go on those shows and play my music.
‘It’s not that I didn’t appreciate the offer, it just didn’t feel right for me.’
So she opted out of the cash-cow that would be appearing on two of America’s top grossing shows shortly after releasing her Greatest Hits.
She was more tempted by an invitation from a Washington school for students with behavioural problems and learning disabilities, which she visited last week. Jett talked to the youngsters about how she overcame adversity to become one of the first female rock ‘n’ roll artists and about how, after hits with her seminal 1970s all-girl punk group The Runaways, she decided to go back to school.
Then, as the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, Jett (real name Joan Marie Larkin) has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine US Top 40 singles, including Bad Reputation, I Hate Myself For Loving You, andCrimson and Clover.
She now sits at the head of Blackheart Records, as the first female artist to own and operate an independent record company.
She has acted in movies and in a Tony-nominated Broadway musical and produced albums by Bikini Kill, Circus Lupus and Germs.
She’s also one of the most interesting additions to the line-up of next weekend’s Isle of Wight Festival and the star is really excited to be visiting the festival for the first time.
She says: ‘I’ve never been, but obviously I’ve heard of it and it’s something I’ve always been interested to do.’
An inspiration to many current female chart stars, she is headlining Ladies’ Night in the Big Top at the Newport festival next Friday.
‘I think it’s gonna be a lot of fun,’ she says. ‘A lot of times I don’t think female musicians get an opportunity to play for large crowds, not rock ‘n’ roll stuff anyway.
‘You certainly get your fill of pop. That gets a big hearing. But in every city and town there’s a great all-girl band or a band with girls in and it’s important to have an outlet for girls looking to be in rock ‘n’ roll. So this is a night I’m excited to be a part of.’
Joan will jet into the UK from Sweden on Thursday night and plans to make the most of her festival experience.
She says: ‘I’m going to stay for as much of the weekend as I can, to enjoy some music and kick back and meet some bands, just take it all in, you know?’
Jett’s place as a headlining act in this impressive festival line-up is bolstered by the fact that she’s fresh in people’s minds from a 2010 Greatest Hits collection and much talked about film re-enacting the start of her career.
The Runaways is out on DVD now and tells of how Jett co-founded her pioneering all-girl punk quintet as a young teen.
The film’s tagline is: ‘The most influential rock band you’ve never heard of.’ But, with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning from the blockbustingTwilight franchise playing the lead roles of Jett and her bandmate Cherie Currie, the band is back in the limelight now.
Jett, who served as an executive producer for the film, explains: ‘I tried to be involved as much as was feasibly possible, but there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen on a movie.
‘I wanted to make sure I could keep an eye on the story. I was on set every day with monitor and headphones so I was out the way to give the director free reign on the set.
‘I had to stay around to make sure it wasn’t turned into something not accurate, that didn’t give a sense of what we went through.
‘But you have to remember it is a movie. A lot of the things did happen, but some things were embellished. Some timelines were shifted and things combined. The movie would be 10 hours long otherwise!
‘A lot of it was true, but a lot of it was not exact,’ she clarifies.
Joan says the experience of seeing her own life played out before her was ‘surreal’.
‘Just seeing Dakota and Kristen and Michael Shannon dressed as myself and Cherie and Kim, was surreal as they looked so much like us.’
The film shows Joan growing-up on tour with her band and the star says that, though the unusual lifestyle undoubtedly affected her, she didn’t realise it at the time.
‘Teenagers are not settled,’ she comments. ‘Growing-up you’re figuring out who you are. It’s a turbulent time, even if it’s all good.
‘It was very intense growing-up on the road, but I think at the time it didn’t seem to affect me in a negative way.
‘I didn’t have the traditional relationships, the social things like dating and going to school, but I didn’t realise.’
In the film, Joan says that rock ‘n’ roll saved her life. She maintains now that ‘at the time it was an accurate statement’.
‘It saved my life because it gave me a direction and a focus.
‘My parents told me when I was five years old that I could be whatever I wanted to be.
‘I wanted to be an astronaut and an archaeologist. Then I took drama and music classes.
‘Then growing into a teen, my music tastes shifted from pop to rock ‘n’ roll. I was into Free, The Rolling Stones, T. Rex.
‘I would listen to Led Zeppelin and my father would say “what the hell are you listening to?”
‘I wanted to make those guitar sounds,’ remembers Joan who went on to be one of only two women named in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time (the other was Joni Mitchell).
After The Runaways disbanded, Joan’s next album was rejected by 23 major labels, so she released it on her own.
The debut single, I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll, was a number one hit, selling over 10 million.
Now, exactly 30 years on from that, she’s still going strong.
Like Andrex – soft, strong and very, very long.

See Joan Jett and the Blackhearts at the Isle of Wight Festival, Seaclose Park, Newport, next Friday. She headlines Ladies’ Night in the Big Top on the first full day of the festival.

Joan on...

...producing a film about herself
I had to separate things. Being the artist it’s about, you want to say “you’re missing this” and “you can’t do that”. But you have to step back and see it as story you’re trying to tell. You have to trust the actors to tell the story.

...Kristen Stewart’s representation of her
Kristen had my posture, you know, the way I stand in space. It was really freaky. My friends and family saw it and thought she nailed it.

...what festival goers can expect from her Isle of Wight performance
Straight up rock ‘n’ roll. We’re going to do songs that cover my whole career including a bit from The Runaways, all our hits, a lot of well-known album tracks and singles released around he world. It’ll be a good cross-section of my career.

...her plans for the rest of 2011
We’re working on new songs, getting in the studio to get new music out and we’re on the road all summer and into the fall.

...is she still into British bands like she was as a youngster?
I’m not as aware of current bands because I don’t listen to the radio the way I used to. But when I do hear a song I like then I find out it’s British, I’m not surprised.
