Kate Phizackerley has a post on her blog: Destruction of Amarna Boundary Stela (Unverified) (Thursday, June 02, 2011) which draws attention to - so far unverified - reports that 14 reliefs were destroyed by dynamite at Amarna about 6 months ago. See also Egyptian Dreams (hint of confirmation by Ministry sources) This would seem to have happened in January 2011. As she says: If true, this story is more than just the destruction of a very important monument but the delay in the news would raise obvious concerns about what else might have happened without being reported.

Andie Byrnes has more information including a comment by Barry Kemp: Damage to Amarna stela? It seems part of the problem lies in the inability of certain Egyptian newspapers to ascertain the facts of a case before publishing any old rubbish about them which we have seen here before. Though damage does seem to have taken place.
