Fakes Seized on Gulf Antiquities Market

.
It is being reported that the Criminal Investigation Department of the Abu Dhabi Police recently arrested two Arabs (a cook and a construction worker) in connection with an attempt to sell two apparently looted "antiquities dating back to 500 B.C.". Their value was initially assessed at 3.3 million AED (871 000 USD). Interestingly, analysis showed they were both fakes (but they were confiscated nevertheless). The United Arab Emirates have expressed its commitment to banning trading and smuggling of antiquities, or intellectual or cultural properties in accord with international conventions on protecting the cultural heritage in the form of movable property or artefacts. The authorities there are also making strenuous efforts to combat all forms of smuggling and commercial fraud.
